She controls the harvest. Persephone, her beloved daughter was kidnapped by Hades and taken to the underworld. But they made an agreement that Persephone could be with her mother in the outerworld for 3/4 of the time, and the other 1/4 she would be Hades's wife. During that 1/4, Demeter is depressed, and that is what we call winter.

1. she struck erysichthon with everlasting hunger cause he offended demeter by killing a very special dryad. she sent aethon to curse him, and he was forever hungry. he even sold his daughter into slavery! he soon died cause he ate himself

2. a queen and king helped demeter in disguise of an old woman. to repay his kindness, she tried making the queen's son immortal. the queen found out and screamed! demeter got mad and decided to give up on him and teach triptolemus the secrets of agriculture instead.

3. persephone was stolen by hades, and this made demeter mad. zeus sorted it out by letting 'em share.
