William T. Sherman was born on February 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio. He came from a large family, was the sixth of 11 children, and his father died when he was just nine years old. Sherman had a challenging childhood due to financial difficulties, but he excelled academically and developed a keen interest in military history and strategy.
The Union forces under Sherman. The Confederates under John Hood escaped into the mountains, hoping they could force Sherman to follow them. Sherman ignored them and turned South East, living off the land as he went. This was the March to the Sea.
In 1864 NEW RESPONDENT Atlanta fell on Sept 1, 1864, when the Confederates under Maj. Gen. Hood abandoned the city to the advancing Federal forces of Gen. Sherman. Sherman's March to the sea, began on Nov. 15, 1864.
Grant defeated Lee, as planned. Sherman failed to defeat Joe Johnston's Army of Tennessee (later John Hood's), but this army was totally routed later by George Thomas at Nashville. Sherman then went on to cross Georgia and the Carolinas, which definitely shortened the war, finally defeating Joe Johnston in command of another Confederate army.
Because Sherman had managed to keep Bedford Forrest occupied in Tennessee, and unable to cut his supply-lines, to try and pull him back from Atlanta. The newly-appointed Confederate commander in Atlanta, John Hood, failed in his attacks on the two widely-separated Union armies, and escaped into the mountains, leaving Sherman to occupy the city. This gave a major boost to Lincoln in his election campaign.

US General William Sherman learned of the new commander of the Southern Army of Tennessee, John Hood and expected a tough campaign on his way to Atlanta. Despite Sherman's good judgment, he met little resistance from Confederate forces. As the end of July, 1864 approached, he gave thought that the Confederate forces were to evacuate Atlanta without a fight.

In mid-July of 1864, Union General William Sherman was headquartered outside of Atlanta. There a Union spy informed him that Confederate General Joseph Johnston was being replaced with General John Bell Hood. Sherman knew little about Hood, except that he lost a leg at the Battle of Chickamauga.
