The Confederate army commander in the American Civil War. Lee was the son of Henry "Light-horse" Lee, a hero of the American Revolution. The Lee family was friends with Washington and even lived close to each other. REL was a war hero, many battles known; battle of Bull Run, battle of Shiloh, battle of Gettysburg, and many others to lead his troops into battle. He is often seen as one of the greatest generals the USA has ever seen (at the outbreak of war he was offered to be general of the Union army, but declined feeling that he could not leave his home country of Virginia). REL knew that was coming to an end after the battle of Gettysburg. In April 9, 1865 when he met with Grant to sign the surrender.

9. 63 years of age when Lee died.

There are suggestions that Lee's autobiographer, Douglas Southall Freeman embellished Lee's final moments; as Lee suffered a stroke on September 28, 1870. Dying two weeks later, on October 12, 1870, shortly after 9 a.m. from the effects of pneumonia. Lee's stroke had resulted in aphasia, rendering him unable to speak. When interviewed the four attending physicians and family stated "he had not spoken since 28 September...".

The General did have slaves and was known to have ordered them punished (one must remember it was a different era) he also tried to evade the rules of the will of Mary's father George Washington Parke Custis and wanted to maintain the slaves but the Courts enforced the will.

A few interesting facts about the Confederate general Robert E. Lee was that he was quite a religious man, and believed strongly in loyalty and confidence in one's own army. But this confidence led to the downfall of the southern troops in the battle at Gettysburg, because he overestimated the tired and weary men of Pickett's charge, and practically led a suicide battle. But he is still one of the most respected and loved men in the South. He was from Virginia, and was very loyal to the state. Although he fought for the Confederate, he did not completely approve of slavery and the degradation of the African Americans.
