The cave lion, also known as the American lion, is an extinct species of the cat family. It lived in the mountains, forests, and grasslands of Canada and America. It went extinct about 10,000 years ago, juring a mass extinction. This animal is known as "The greastest cat that ever lived", because of it's amazing size and power. Some research suggests that this cat could have been taller than the average man... while standing on all four legs. It would have weighed possibly over 1000 pounds. Despite it's name, the cave lion was not a lion, it was actually more closely related to the tiger and leopard. It even had pale stripes and spots. It did very closely resemble a muscular lioness, however. (The male cave lions did not have manes.) These carnivores lived in groups, and hunted large herbivores, such as the massive American bison. Cave lions are also thought to have been very intelligent. Scientists have found very few remains of cave lions in tar pits, suggesting that these felines were smart enough to avoid them. Cats are considered to be incredible fighters, and the top predators of all land animals. This animal lives up to that name. The largest member of the bear family, the short-faced bear, lived juring the time of the cave lion. It is one of the biggest land-dwelling carnivores that ever lived. (not including dinosaurs.) Cave lions and short-faced bears definetly met up with eachother, for their territories crossed eachother. Amazing fights would have taken place between these feirce "warriors". The cats were more agile, cunning, and were better fighters than bears. (This is still true for bears and cats today) The bears were much bigger and stronger, yet had poor eyesight. Remains of short-faced bears with the claw and teeth marks of cats shows people that the cave lion certainly could have won the battles with these bears. The American lion was certainly the king of beats.

The cave lion is no different from your regular African lion. Males generally have thick fur located on it's neck and head with shorter and lighter colored hair on it's main body. They are generally big with slightly darker fur. This allows them to blend into the darkness better. The cave lion is also equiped with sharp claws for catching prey and big sharp teeth for chewing and riping it's prey.
