The Gulf was unnamed until the early 1540s and was considered part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish name most often applied to it was Seno Mexicano (seno="gulf" or "bay"), although it was occasionally referred to as Golfo de Nueva Espaa, or Golfo de Mexico. For more than 150 years after its discovery, the Gulf of Mexico was a forbidden area to nations other than Spain.

The first European to explore the Gulf of Mexico was Amerigo Vespucci in 1497.

The Gulf Stream forms in the Gulf of Mexico and travels across the Atlantic Ocean to warm up parts of Western Europe. The warm water of the Gulf also helps hurricanes feed hurricanes that cause damage in North America.

There are oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf also has important fishing that feeds many people and sport for others.
