The United States faced many difficulties as a new nation. There is no definitive list of just five, and they are all subject to a certain amount of opinion and historical interpretation.

1. The largest disadvantage is that they were declaring independence from one of the world's most powerful nations, and certainly entering a war against a powerful Navy and Army. And this is at a time when the United States had a variety of local and state militias, but no real national Army or Navy.

2. The new country would have tremendous financial strain, with almost no ability to borrow. It would also have no common currency.

3. The new country would be blockaded and would have a great deal of difficulty Importing and Exporting important commodities.

4. The new country's borders with the Native Americans and with nearby European colonies would be subject to great dispute. English Canada, French Canada, Spanish Florida and French Louisiana all had territorial disputes with the United States.

5. There were substantial internal differences between regions, with very different economies and ways of life, and great differences of opinion on what it meant to be an American, and even whether America should actually be a nation.
