Spain was one of the first to colonize North America. St. Augustine is the first colony in North America. English separatists also influenced North America. To get away from the Church of England after Henry VII created his own church, these people left to create their own colonies. Puritans and pilgrims settled here and their "work ethic" is still affecting us to this day. They also established the separation of church and state. Ultimately the English are the reason the United States of America. The French settled in Canada. New Orleans was created by the French and their influence can still be seen there today as well as in Quebec. Portugal also influenced North America. They were the first European nation to use slavery ( although Africans and Muslim merchants had started it before the Portuguese used it) The Portuguese use of slaves became popular and ultimately affected the use if slaves in North America.
