Comprehensive information on corals and coral reefsrepresents one of the many benefits of the scientific work of Dorothy Hill, AC, CBE, FAA, FRS [September 10, 1907-April 23, 1997]. Dr. Hill was the first female University professor and the only female president of the Australian Academy of Science.

Those honors were accorded her for her solid training and research in geology. Specifically, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, England. Her dissertation dealt with a topic in the corals of Scotland. Before returning to Australia, she came up with the standard, systematized descriptions regarding certain corals. Back home, she mapped the limestone corals for every part of the continent country except for South Australia. Her work became the worldwide standard.
