Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are a species of deer indigenous to the western part of North America (Canada, USA & Mexico). They take their name from their large ears - which somewhat resemble those of mules and are noticeably larger than those of their Eastern North American cousins the White-tailed deer.
They are most common in the area of the Rocky Mountains. Mule deer antlers are bifurcated; they "fork" as they grow, rather than branching from a single main beam, as is the case with white-tails. They also tend to be bigger than White-tailed deer.
