Nuns are enrolled in religious orders with various Apostolates ( missions, in the sense of career paths) It used to be fairly evenly divided between the teaching apostolate and the Health-Care hospital apostolate. At one time about half the Nursing schools in the United States fell under Religious hospital staffing . ( This was not remotely true of any other professional calling). In Hudson County alone St. Francis Hospital and St.Mary"s were both o r occupational roles- some cloistered ( extremely limited contact with the outside world were involved in making religious articles , for example including Priestly vestments. There, were in a sense ( St. Zita convent was an example, Logistics sisters in charge of distributing religious articles to chapels on ships! This was rare, most sisters were either in the teaching or health-care roles.

.

Catholic AnswerThe above answer refers to Sisters, not Nuns. Nuns are usually cloistered religious and always women bound by solemn vows. Their work usually is anything that they can do in their cloister. Thus, it is usually (aside from Choir and chapel, daily recitation of the Divine Office and Mass) farming, sewing, baking. Sisters (as opposed to nuns) are religious women in simple vows, perpetual vows, etc. (i.e. NOT solemn vows). Sisters are the ones that we commonly think of as we are most familiar with them, they can teach, nurse, help at the parish, etc. Their apostolate is usually determined by the founder, although, the Ursulines, for example, were started exclusively to teach poor, young, women. They have gone far from their original vocation.

They council, Volunteer, sit with the sick, help with events, do mission work, do classes for the engaged, married, baptisms, The priest can't do all the planning himself classes, council...etc, the catholic church has many and it takes many to keep it running and going smoothly. Nuns typically take care of preparing all the linens, flowers and special items that are placed on the alter in preparation for the Holy Mass. They also cook, clean, sew, wash and generally keep the church in proper order. Depending on their talents, many nuns teach and frequently participate in the musical portion of the Mass by singing or creating the musical support for the choir. Over the years, nuns have gained more freedon and often travel to attend seminars or just to broaden their knowledge of world events. Nuns are dedicated to serving the church and are some of the most interesting individuals once you get to know them. There are exceptions to all of the things mentioned, but that is true in any vocation. After all, they are still human and most of all, women at heart.

The vocational outlook of nuns is usually called an (Apostolate) which is rarely used with male clergy who have (Missions, Vocations, etc)- An apostolate is a specific occupational class within a religious order. for example the Teaching apostolate, the Health care apostolate (Nurses, etc) the contemplative or cloistered apostolate, which is the most restrictive and limited to what we would generally call indoor jobs such as making various religious articles such as Robes for priests, funerary banners and trapping, etc. There was a convent of St.Zita who had the unusual mission of distribution of religious supplies to commercial ships in New York and this was sort of the ecclesiastical (Logistics Line) curiously a Navy Oil pipeline ran right underneath their convent and was also used for fleet resupply! The famous pipeline runs under l4th street and is very much in use. the spiritual one (shut down) sojme years ago.The Convent of St.Zita has closed.

For many Catholic nuns, their primary work is prayer - to give worship and praise to God, to thank Him for His blessings, to intercede for others, and to unite themselves with him in contemplation. They do this in obedience to the Jesus' command to "pray always." (Luke 21:36). A typical day for a community of nuns entirely devoted to prayer would be to arise at 5:00 AM (or earlier); to assemble in the convent chapel for prayers and hymns from the Daily Office several times throughout the day, to attend Holy Mass together in chapel, and the recitation of the Rosary in community. The sisters would take meals together, work at housekeeping chores such as caring for the convent building, laundering and mending their clothing, caring for their garden, preparing and serving their own meals, and helping to care for elderly frail or infirm nuns. Many nuns typically study at least a little each day, subjects such as theology and philosophy, Church history, Church liturgy, music, Latin, and art. In the time they have left over, depending on the convent some of the nuns may produce products they hope to sell for cash - cash which they can then donate to the poor, or to sister convents and missions in poorer parts of the world, and perhaps some of which the convent may use to pay for its own day-to-day operations (taxes, insurance, health care, utilities, building plant maintenance and repairs, food and clothing for the sisters.) Some convents have been famous for the nuns' exquisite needlework; they manufactured luxury quality table linens, lingerie, and decorative items all by hand for export throughout the world. Some convents have produced choice confections, jams and preserves, teas, wines and liqueurs. Some have made supplies for use in churches throughout the vicinty, and earned their keep in that way. The nuns may retire to bed by 8:30 or 9:00 at night, but often arise again at 1:00 or 1:30 to assemble in the Chapel for prayers and hymns. After this they may remain at prayer, or return to their rooms (called cells) to catch a little more sleep before the next day begins at about 5:00 AM.

Enclosed Nuns devote their life to praying for God's people. However some nuns work within Communities or help out in Parishes. Nun's used to teach in the catholic schools back in the olden days, however you don't see much of that any more. They used to run their own schools, care for the poor, run orphanages and hospitals. You see some of that now, however not as much as you used to.

Roman Catholic AnswerMany different jobs, monks and nuns traditionally have engaged in farming and education. Monks, depending on how cloistered they are may run retreats, parishes, colleges, high schools. Nuns run the gamut, traditionally they have been entirely cloistered and have engaged in traditional crafts such as making altar breads, altar linens, and sewing fine vestments. Some nuns run schools, hospitals, orphanages, etc. The different between nuns and sisters is that nuns are vowed and sisters are under perpetual promises, or even annual promises. Vowed monks differ depending on whether they are ordained to the priesthood or not, In the old days this used to be known as choir monks (ordained) and claustral monks (brothers who ran the farm, did the domestic work, etc.). Nuns also have the same difference, the choir nuns spent over six hours a day in choir singing the various Offices and assisting at Mass, the claustral sisters attended Chapel much less, usually only Mass, Prime, and Compline.
