There are many reasons that people object to veal production. Some of the reasons include:

  • Calves are taken away from their dams at a very young age (right after birth) which prohibits the opportunity to bond with its mom and the cow to be with her calf
  • Calves used are "by-products" of the dairy industry, pertaining particularly to bull calves and freemartin calves
  • Calves are confined to small hutches or cages that are often so small they can't lie down, turn around or move around comfortably
  • Calves are fed a diet that is said to make them anemic, or even leave them just as anemic as when they first came into the veal operation
  • At two to three months of age, these calves are slaughtered, which is considered, by many, to be "too young" to have their lives ended...some like to equate such calves with two to three-month-old infants, even though a two- to three-month old calf is about the same age, physiologically, as a ten year old child.
