The pros are that you get to vote for who you, the people, want as head of state. The cons are that are you actually any better off given the choice ? You see, at the time that I write this, and I am not a great monarchist, but I am anti republican, the Queen we have had in UK for the past 50 odd years, despite all that is said about the dysfunctionality of her family, has done a sterling job. And this is in spite of the fact that had not her uncle, King Edward VIII not abdicated in favour of his brother, King George VI, that the present Queen would never have acceded the throne ! Therefore Queen Elizabeth II has arrived on the throne quite by chance. And it needs saying that the idea of one President Thatcher, yes, it would have happened, fills me with total Horror. Similarly in History the only time we, the British, have been without a Monarch, having given Charles the 1st the chop, we were ruled by Oliver Cromwell: The fact that he was disinterred and his head put on a pike speaks for itself !
