Traditionally, there are some traits associated with the German national character, either by Germans themselves or by those outside Germany. However, it is important never to judge an individual by these traits, which can so easily turn into damaging and inaccurate stereotypes. Having said that, here are some traits historically associated with Germany and its people: cleanliness, order, efficiency, and industry. Germans often refer to their country as "das Land der Dichter und Denker", the land of poets and thinkers. Even today, there are strong regional differences between parts of Germany with varying histories and geographies. Bavaria, in particular, has its own way of life and value systems. German Europe, generally understood to include the modern countries of Germany, Austria and much of Switzerland, has produced an exceptional number of people with talents in such areas as music, philosophy, science and engineering. Austria and German-speaking Switzerland share many characteristics with Germans, yet are distinct in their own histories, cultures, and world views. It is also important to remember that in today's Germany, there has been a profound effect on German society through the presence of a large number of immigrant groups such as Turks. These people have brought their own national characteristics with them and had a lasting influence on German life. One needs to be extremely careful about thinking in terms of 'national character' and 'national' traits. The underlying assumption is that they are unchanging and that a nation is comparable to an inidividual. In the period from the rise of nationalism till about c.1960 notions of 'national character' were credited with immense explanatory power but now they are generally considered unhelpful. For example, modern Germany is largely pacifist - but observers of Bismarckian and Wilhelmine Germany considered the country and people militaristic. There were also a number of other, unflattering traits that I won't mention here. The answer mentions music - which nobody would dispute ... The point about philosophy is taken, but one needs to add that outside Germany this philosophy is widely considered 'metaphysical', which is not a compliment in the English-speaking countries. As for science and engineering, I doubt if Americans would nowadays accept that Germany has any lead in this area. Moreover, Britain, France and other European countries have also made outstanding contributions. There was a time, from about 1870-1930 or so when the German universities were truly remarkable, but this lead has gone. The nation is, after all, an imagined community and needs its myths and legends to sustain it ...
