Almost 60 thousand British convicts were sent to North America during colonial times, with most of them being sent to the Province of Georgia. The British also used Australia as a penal colony and the French had Devil's Island in French Guiana. Siberia was a penal colony for the Soviets, and Mexico still operates one on Maria Madre Island.
