it is also the best song because the song even though Steppenwolf was talking about motorcycles the words that will be forever remembered in metal heads memory and heart as Heavy Metal people took thoes words and applied that to the type of music

However, Steppenwolf was a far cry from being a Heavy Metal band. Black Sabbath's self-titled song is a better candidate for being the "first". But the first Proto-Heavy Metal song ever was the fabulous "Rumble" by Link Wray in 1958.
