During the war of 1812. Francis Scott Key was in a battle with his team and fighting the British and then, after a big bomb after all the smoke went away, everybody saw that the United States flag was still standing. That is when Francis Scott Key took out an envelope and took out a pen and wrote what he saw. Later it became the United States National Anthem and a poem later in life before Francis Scott Key died.
A short-ish recap:
The war started partly because the British Navy was capturing American ships, and then forcing the Americans to join their navy. Britain was fighting a huge war against Napoleon's French Empire, and needed men for their military, even if it meant attacking the USA (which was not involved in the Napoleonic Wars). There were other factors as well, such as a desire by many Americans to conquer Canada (Thomas Jefferson once described conquering Canada as being so easy that it was just a "matter of marching"), and American anger over the British trade embargo against France.
The war started with Americans invading Canada (which was still a British colony) in an attempt to conquer it. While the American forces were initially successful, the Americans didn't have much of an army so it was weak and inexperienced, and it was unable to capture Canada. The Americans and British/Canadians wound up fighting around Lake Erie for most of the war, with the more experienced British/Canadian forces and their American Indian allies generally winning but never decisively. The British were able to successfully capture and occupy parts of the US, like Michigan and Maine. Near the end of 1813, the Americans were able to decisively defeat one of the major Indian tribes allied with the British, effectively ending the alliance.
Napoleon was defeated in spring of 1814 after his disastrous invasion of Russia, and went into exile (although he would later come back briefly in 1815), so the British were able to begin sending their troops to America to help fight the war there. These fresh troops were able to launch an invasion of Maryland, eventually leading to the attack and burning of Washington DC. During the invasion of Maryland, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which would later be the basis of the American National Anthem.
By the end of 1814, the Napoleonic Wars were largely over and Europe was beginning to settle down (although, as mentioned previously, Napoleon would escape and fight one last major battle at Waterloo before going into exile permanently), and the British no longer needed the extra men for their navy. Since nobody was really winning the war in America, the British and Americans began negotiating to end the war. A treaty was signed at Ghent, in Belgium, officially ending the war on Christmas Eve in 1814. However, back then, news could take months to travel across the Atlantic Ocean, so the armies in America were not aware that the war was over.
In early January 1815, a British army landed near New Orleans, Louisiana in an effort to capture the city, which would have been devastating to the Americans and likely would've caused them to try to end the war. In short, a British force attacked a smaller but well entrenched American army, and was decisively defeated. Andrew Jackson, the American commander, became an instant hero and was elected president about 15 years later.
The war was more or less a draw. The Canadians claimed victory because the Americans were unable to conquer them. The Americans saw the war as a "Second War of Independence" and claimed victory because the powerful British were unable to decisively defeat them, plus the British were defeated at New Orleans.
The reality was neither side really accomplished anything and not much changed- however some American Indians sided with the British, were defeated and eventually driven from their lands. So, in effect, there were no real winners but the Indians were the losers.
