I have owned 7, now, mostly am. staff's., blue nose, red nose, and brindle, and I can say that they are the smartest, most loyal breed I have ever encountered. I would say the sky is the limit, when it comes to training. They catch right on, if you click with them. They are very sensitive and are offended easily. They also sense when you are not honest with them. Lot's of eye contact is a must! To get them to listen, you have to respect them, as well. The old rub their noses in it to house break them will NOT work with a pit. Pride is very important to them. If you break it you will not connect with them. They respect strength, and leadership. They are still a pack animal, and live by those standards. Now, they have short hair, and no fat, so, they are sensitive to the heat, and cold, and do NOT make a good outdoor dog, at all. Also, in my experience, after having to save almost every one of them, are NOT good swimmers. But, for some reason they love the water! They do NOT like to fight. They are very smart, and are easily bored, so constant stimulation is a must. I've had Pits, rotties, labs, wolves, a roomate that had greyhounds, and whippits, cats, a Boa constrictor, goldfish, ect. Pits are by far the most rewarding! Remember, there are 4 different types of pits, and then sub catergories again, so, get the right one. They were all four originally bred for different purposes, or functions. They cannot help their breeding, so consider all factors before getting one. It is at least a fifteen year commitment, and there are too many in shelters now. I save all I can, but, there are just so many, and so many that have been abused! Sorry. I get carried away. It s just so depressing. Anyway, if you havent already gotten one, please consider a rescue. The American Stafforshire Bull Terriers seem to be the best to have. Especially around children. I think they were the breed that was originally bred to baby sit children, while the parents worked. They called them Nanny dogs. They are a cross between the English Bulldog, and the now extinct White Terrier.
