I'm pretty certain you are referring to ANABOLIC steroids, and I think you are asking what the symptoms of addiction to them are. When dealing with the word addiction, you have two types. Physical, in which the body itself may become seriously ill, or level lead to a fatal event in the abrupt absence of a given substance. The other is psychological addiction. Although less of a threat to the body, the symptoms can cause the body to become ill, although to a much lessor degree. Depending on the level of addiction, the general symptoms mainly include anxiety, depression, nausea, weakness, temporary impotence, (I am referring to anabolic steroids here.) also often acute psychological problems including but not limited to possible violent acting out. A person who has been on a high dose for a long period should be seen immediately at the ER for evaluation and consideration for involuntary inpatient detoxification. Do not underestimate these substances. Due to the fact that they are illegal implies a substandard setting in which they were manufactured. Much of these substances have been made from among many other things - Horse urine. Anabolic steroids taken without a (legitimate) doctors prescription, run the risk of Breast Cancer (yes I said it, and women risk it too), prostate cancer, and even worse Liver Cancer. Hepatitis A and B are also very common, and B can be fatal if not taken care of immediately. This is a big problem, and more can be written about it. I hope this helps.

What types of new addictions do addiction centers treat?

Addiction is addiction. While some addictions are more deadly, all addictions have the potential to ruin lives if untreated. Ultimately, a food addition is no less dangerous than an addiction to methamphetamines. It doesn't matter if the addiction is to prescription drugs, alcohol, porn, sex, shopping, food, cocaine and a host of other possibilities. All addiction follows the same route, and cross-addiction is the rule, not the exception. 12-Steps programs, for example, all use the same 12 steps, and substitute "food" or "cocaine" in the place where "alcohol" was first written.

What is another word for addictive?

Dependence is close, as in "dependence on alcohol." Another word for addiction would be a bad habit, some addictions turn into addictions because of obsessive bad habits.

How have social notions of addictions changed over time?

People with addictions have gotten more sympathy with time, and there are now more effective ways to treat addictions. In the past, persons with addictions were seen as having a moral weakness or a lack of willpower. Now, addiction is viewed as a disease. Also, there is some understanding that some people are born with more of an addiction tendency than others. It is just that not everyone with an addiction tendency has a socially unacceptable addiction. There are work addicts, church addicts, adrenalin junkies, and people who jump out of airplanes for kicks, and they tend to not get grief for their addictions. So just because someone has an addiction gene, it doesn't mean they are going to be smoking crack, shooting heroin, using meth, and binge drinking. For some, they apply such tendencies to their work, such as a stock broker who takes large risks. But even then, there is a danger, since that is not much different than visiting a casino and gambling. So there are many more addicts than are in recovery. There are also addicts with private or hidden addictions, and to things which most people cannot understand would be addicting.

What drug addiction is the same as food addiction?

I'd say any psychological addiction is similar to a food addiction. Psychological addictions to different drugs don't vary very much because they are all essentially the brain yearning for an experience that normal living by itself cannot provide. The only difference would be strengths, and that again wouldn't help b/c food addictions vary in strength among people. If I were to compare food addiction to anything, I suppose I would say cocaine. Stronger than weed but weaker than heroine as far as psychological addictions go, which is about where I suppose food addiction belongs. If this is for a project of some kind, just go with crack. It seems that addiction to anything non-drug is compared to crack, so just go with something that everyone thinks they understand.

What causes addictions- and not just the drug kind?
