1) Koran and Hadith must be followed literally, and exactly, no matter what.

2) Women are subservient to men; although arguments have been made that Islam in fact emancipates women, the Wahabis point to Koran verses that say that a woman only has freedom, if she has made babies first. Indeed in Saudi Arabia the majority of the college girls there, chances are, are already mothers, married off as young as 14 some of them. A given PhD student in Saudi Arabia, could be the mother of a 16 year old son, even though she herself is 28.

3) Muslim law has a strict dress code for both men and women. The Prophet Mohamed even said, paraphrasing "if a young man be handsome and well made (fit and muscular), on pain of lashing, he should keep his nakedness hidden, so as to not entice women to do evil (adultery or fornication)." Mohamed, like Solomon, was one of the few men in human history to realize, that the female sex drive is in fact stronger than the male; the dress code indeed applies both to men and women, according to Mohamed himself, if a physically fit young man parades around in front of young women, the Muslim authorities have the right to lash him. Of course in Saudi Arabia there is a gender double standard; westerners walk around with their shirts off all the time due to the heat and no one does anything. I'll let you know right now though that according to Mohamed, that's forbidden. Regarding women, Islam says specifically, women are forbidden to dress in a matter that entices men sexually, however it does not say anything, about women being walking tents. Strictly speaking so long as a woman hides her curves, she's fine, and, regarding the whole hair thing it is RECOMENDED, but not required. In Saudi Arabia though, the Imams have argued that to MAKE SURE, a woman is dressed "decently" she be covered head to toe. Wahabi thinking has spread, to other parts of the Muslim world it is not restricted ONLY to Saudi Arabia. I'll let you know right now though, nowhere in the Koran or the Hadith, does it say a woman is to be a walking tent; she is supposed to keep her goods hidden, well hidden, but, she is not supposed to be a walking tent. Again the Wahabis enacted a law, arguing that due to the nature of the female sex drive, and that women "can not be trusted," that women, need a strict dress code.

4) All punishments outlined in the Koran must be literally carried out. However, in modern day Saudi Arabia, when punishing a thief for instance the hand is medically amputated, no one heats up a sword in a furnace like in Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner, and then uses the red hot sword so that when the hand is cut off, the wound is immediately cauterized the whole sword thing is not done anymore. You are injected with a local anesthetic that makes your arm go numb and then a doctor removes your hand. Regarding the whole death by stoning, I am not sure, if the men or women, more than likely mostly women, are given an anesthetic or not. Technically, due to a legal loophole in Islamic law, an anesthetic is not forbidden; a woman can be put to sleep with a surgical anesthetic, be stoned to death and by a strict technicality, that does not violate Sharia law. Sharia law does not say anything, about whether the woman should feel pain or not, however I am not aware if Saudi stoning deaths are brutal tortures, or, if a person is given an anesthetic first. The whole idea of "humaneness" in Sharia law has become popular in Saudi Arabia I've been told but, hey, I don't live there, I can not confirm to the truth of that. What few Saudis I've talked to CLAIM, that hands are amputated surgically, and in a civilized manner, not cut off like in that Costner movie in a barbaric way. Again though, I can not vouch for the truth of that.

5) Muslim courts, conveniently enough, must be presided over by Imams. In Saudi Arabia virtually all of the judges are Wahabis, the most powerful one, a great grandson of Abdul Wahab himself.

How did wahhabism influence sunni Islam in 19th century?

Too many critics of Islam, including atheists, fail to appreciate just how diverse and varied Islam can be. There are things you can say that apply to all or most Muslims, as is the case with Christianity, but there are many more things which only apply to some or a few Muslims. This is especially true when it comes to Muslim extremism because Wahhabi Islam, the primary religious movement behind extremist Islam, includes beliefs and doctrines not found elsewhere. It would be a mistake and unethical to criticize all of Islam on the basis of doctrines particular to Wahhabi Muslims. Modern Islamic extremism and terrorism simply cannot be explained or understood without looking at the history and influence of Wahhabi Islam. This means that it's important from an ethical and an academic perspective to understand what Wahhabi Islam teaches, what's so dangerous about it, and why those teachings differ from other branches of Islam.AnswerTo gain a good basic understanding of Wahhabiyyah & it's impact in Islam I recommend taking a look at Wikipedia, especially here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahhabism
