Originally, it was proposed that a low fat diet could help individuals lose weight. Since fat contains more calories per gram than carbohydrates and protein (9 calories/gram vs. 4 calories a gram), it was thought that it would be easier for individuals to cut fats from their diets since it would mean a small reduction of mass would result in a greater reduction of calories. Unfortunately, feeling full and satisfied is more complicated than just consuming a great enough mass of food. As a result, many individuals who excessively cut fats ended up more than compensating by consuming more calories from carbohydrates and protein. Instead, choose a sensible diet low in saturated fat and high in monunsaturated fats and omega-3 fats.

Protein is not a horrible thing to eat, but if you eat it in high amounts, you risk ruining your kidneys. And you really, really need your kidneys. The protein molecule does not pass through the kidneys well in high amounts, and kidney failure can often be attributed to high protein consumption with a poor balance of other essential foods.

The pro of a high fat diet is that you have to eat far less to feel full. In addition to that, fatty foods generally have more flavor. The con of eating high fat diets is that fat is sticky and gets into your arteries, and clear arteries are better than arteries full of sludge. Clogged arteries impede the flow of blood in your heart, which we know causes bad things to happen, like heart attacks. The interesting thing is that if you eat a high fat diet but make it a very low sugar diet, the body handles the fat differently and the artery clogging risk is almost completely negated. Unfortunately, most people who like to eat fatty stuff also like to eat sweet stuff, which is even stickier. That's the American diet, and it's very unhealthy. People who eat a lot of fat AND a lot of carbs (sugars) die earlier for those choices, and their last 10 years of life pretty much suck. Last thing. If you eat a lot of fat and sweets, you're probably not hungry enough to bother with eating other things that are very important to your body, such as green leafy vegetables and high fiber foods. Depriving your body of these important nutrients is not good for your digestive system or your brain... colon cancer is a horrible way to die.
