During the Renaissance, among members the upper classes at least, it was customary to be as charming and engaging as possible on social occasions. It was thought polite and courteous to make a point of mingling, visiting with, or at least paying respects to everyone present at an event, and in an era before recorded music or TV, even at the most casual outings or gatherings, it was thought courteous to help one's host to entertain fellow guests by performing a song, playing an piece or two on a musical instrument, or reciting a Ballad or some poetry. I suppose you might call this an example of Renaissance "living life to the fullest."
