The Revolutionary War was a forcible over throw of an established government; the British Empire's control in North America (discounting Canada); illegal, in that all participants could've been hanged if they lost the Revolt.

The US Civil War was specific states (13 of them) trying to leave the union, and start their own country. A civil war is TWO factions from the SAME region/nation fighting each other. This is a border line illegal conflict in that the rebels can be considered traitors and also hanged for their actions.
