The shuttle system has been given the name Space Transportation System (STS), of which the shuttles have been the key element. Initially lacking a space station with which to interact, the American shuttles operated with two major goals:

(1) the conduct of scientific experiments in a zero-gravity environment, and

(2) the launch, capture, repair, and release of satellites.

Now an international program relying on help from the European Space Agency (ESA), Canada, Japan, China, and of course Russia. With Space Stations operating, the purpose of the shuttle changed to transporting goods and Astronauts/Cosmonauts to the current International Space Station while bringing back experiments and Astronauts/Cosmonauts who are going home after a lengthy stay.

How do you get food on the ISS?

All of the food, water and air that the ISS crew members need is carried from the earth to the station on Shuttle missions. Food and water get there the same way crew replacements get there.

The space program has had no fatalities?

False. The Russians have lost several cosmonauts while in orbit, and the USA has had its own fatalities. The Apollo 1 crew members were killed in an on-the-ground test of the space capsule, when a fire started in the pure oxygen atmosphere of the space capsule. The seven astronauts aboard Challenger were killed when one of the solid rocket boosters exploded during a launch, and the seven-member crew of the space shuttle Columbia were killed when the shuttle went out of control and broke up during re-entry. Several astronauts have been killed in more routine aircraft accidents.

How does the Hubble space telescope move?

The HST orbits at 559 km above Earth but it is subject to Earth's drag, pulling it gradually down. In order to counter this effect the HST has fuel and rockets that are used for correcting the orbit and also raise it in altitude. However, the effect of that drag on the 10-ton instrument (when weighed on Earth) is much less than on the 450-ton ISS at 400 km (where the drag is 70 to 100 m within 24 hours).

Who took the hubble s space telescope up into space?

On April 24, 1990, shuttle mission STS-31 saw Discovery launch the telescope successfully into its planned orbit. The crew was comprised of: Commander Loren J. Shriver, Pilot Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Mission Specialists Steven A. Hawley, Bruce McCandless II and Kathryn D. Sullivan.

What would happen if a pebble sized meator made a hole in a spaceship in space with no air?

Spacecraft are divided into air-tight sections, just as ships are divided into watertight compartments. If a small meteoroid were to punch a hole in a spacecraft, the air would begin to leak out into space. If the crew were not able to patch the hole quickly enough, or to get into their space suits, the crew would die of lack of air. So far, this hasn't been a problem, but on longer space missions the crew will need to be carefully drilled in what to do should a meteoroid puncture the hull. Fortunately, the emergency patching repair would be easy; some putty or clay would serve as a very quick and effective stopper.
