Australia's major rivers are:

  • Murray River - officially Australia's longest river
  • Darling River
  • Murrumbidgee River
  • Lachlan River
  • Flinders River (longest in Queensland)
  • Castlereagh
  • Macquarie
  • Burdekin

Other important rivers, though not necessarily "major" rivers, are:

  • Diamantina River and Cooper Creek which run through western Queensland and ultimately empty into Lake Eyre
  • Culgoa, Balonne, Warrego and Condamine Rivers which feed the Darling River
  • Gascoyne River, the longest in Western Australia
  • Goulburn River (Victoria)
  • Hunter River, one that frequently floods in NSW, together with the Clarence and the Richmond
  • Dumaresq, Macintyre and Tweed Rivers, which form part of the border between Queensland and NSW
  • Burdekin River, forming a major dam in northern Queensland

Each of Australia's state capital cities is built on a river.

  • Sydney - Hawkesbury and Parramatta Rivers
  • Melbourne - Yarra
  • Adelaide - Torrens
  • Brisbane - Brisbane
  • Perth - Swan
  • Hobart - Derwent
  • Australia's national capital, Canberra, is on the Molonglo River

There are many more, and the majority form most of the river systems of the eastern half of Australia.

There are many significant waterways in Australia.
The Murray River is Australia's longest navigable river, and well known for its stretches of sandy beaches. It was used extensively for transport in the past, with paddle steamers transporting goods and passengers from where it forms most of the border between Victoria and New South Wales, to Goolwa, near its mouth, in South Australia.

In addition, the Darling River is a significant waterway as well, as are the Murrumbidgee and Lachlan Rivers.

There are many more navigable waterways, such as Sydney Harbour and the many rivers that flow into it, the Brisbane River, Yarra River, Fremantle Harbour and the Swan River, just to name a few.

Ignoring arbitrary changes of name, Australia's longest waterway is that part of the Murray- Darling River system that commences east of Killarney in Queensland (called the Condamine River at that point), and going downstream, changes its name to the Balonne River, then the Culgoa River, before joining the Darling River, finally joining the Murray River at Wentworth, before flowing on the sea near Goolwa in South Australia.

  • Brisbane - Brisbane
  • Perth - Swan
  • Hobart - Derwent
  • Australia's national capital, Canberra, is on the Molonglo River

Major lakes:
