Spices are minerals or produce of roots, seeds or fruit of plants, used to colour or flavour dishes. Herbs are generally used to the same effect, but are made from fresh or dried leaves and flowers.

Some examples for spices are cinnamon (bark), pepper (seed), salt (mineral), nutmeg (fruit). Examples for herbs include oregano (leaves) and lavender (flowers).

Note the division between spices and herbs isn't always clear. Lavender flowers are used as a herb, but cloves or safran, both parts of flowers, are considered spices.

Spice is a flavoring that is added to food to enhance it's natural flavor. Spices can be used in everything from cake to meat.
