There were many hardships, almost too many too count. The most common ones were:

Lack of food

Lack of water

Exposure (especially during the winter months)

Frostbite

Hypothermia

Other diseases

Wagons/Handcarts breaking

Death

Etc.

When family members died the rest of the family had to bury them in usually an unmarked grave and continue onwards. It was especially hard if the parents died because then the task of continuing to move the family west was on the shoulders of the oldest child, ages probably 8-18.

The company with the greatest amount of hardships was probably the Martin-Willy Handcart Company, which was stranded in Wyoming (Martin's Cove) for a couple weeks during the bitter winter. They were rescued by a team Brigham Young sent up from Salt Lake City.
