There are no OSHA dress codes for dental offices or other activities. OSHA does require that each employer assess the workplace and work assignments and require that employees use protective clothing and equipment appropriate to the hazard.

In that regard, most dentists and dental staff should follow generally recognized good practice to protect themselves and their patients from possible contamination.

Each team member should wear PPE (personal protective equipment) while working on the patient. PPE usually consists of gloves, mask, face shield or goggles and gowns.

Gowns should be water and splash resistant in order to avoid possible soaking of contaminated body fluids (saliva, blood) through the cloth and getting onto the operator's skin. Also a gown should have a long sleeves with cuffs, be long enough to cover laps when operator is seated and have a closed collar. It should be change in the end of each day or earlier if it becomes soiled.

Gloves and masks should be changed for each patient and never reused. Masks should be changed earlier if they become wet and gloves should be changed if torn.

OSHA does not have requirements regarding a dress code in any field. OSHA requires the employer to assess the workplace and work practices and determine whether and where personal protective equipment may be required, and then to provide appropriate equipment and require its use.

Can you use a dental assisting certificate as an advantage to get a dental hygenist degree?

Typically, dental hygiene is a competitive program in that there are more applicants than seats available. Therefore, it becomes a selection process (by committee) where the best students are chosen particular to established criteria. Each institution may have their own entrance requirements. One of the things they look at is past experience. In your case they will see that you know something about the field, and are serious in your pursuit to achieve your goal as a dental hygienist. In this way it is an advantage. In addition, if you completed a diploma program in dental assisting from a regionally accredited college or university, some credits may be transferred toward your intended dental program. Still, if not, it will still serve you well. Other requirements you may have to complete before applying are English, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology, etc. As I stated, each school will have requirements particular to itself.

Dental Assisting Opportunities in Portland?

Individuals seeking to enter or further a career in the dental field will find that Portland offers a number of employment opportunities for dental assistants, hygienists and office staff. Dental assisting is a field currently experiencing strong growth in order to allow dentists to perform complicated procedures while assistants provide patients with comprehensive, routine care. Dental assistants typically work full-time or part-time during the weekday although evenings or weekends may be required depending upon the specific hours of the office. Dentists seek assistants who are capable of working independently and as part of a team to provide optimal oral healthcare to patients of the practice. Traditionally, dental assistants were trained on the job under the direct supervision and guidance of the licensed dentist in whose office they were employed. As job growth continues for this field and dentists continue to perform increasingly complex procedures, many community colleges and vocational schools are offering training programs which take approximately a year to complete and result in a certificate from the institution. States differ widely on the requirements regarding licensure of dental assistants although more than half of the states recognize the Certified Dental Assistant designation, indicating that the individual has successfully passed a national certification examination. Dental assistants are integral members of a dentist office as they are responsible for preparing materials and instruments for the patient, recording dental and health histories, working along with the dentist during procedures and advising patients regarding effective oral hygiene habits. Individuals seeking dental employment opportunities in Portland can benefit from researching local openings in dental assisting. In contrast to dental hygienists, assistants are not eligible to work independently during procedures and must always be in close proximity to the presiding dentist when working. The average wage for dental assistants ranges from $27,000 to $37,000 depending on certification, experience and location. Applicants searching for dental jobs in Portland are likely to encounter positive job growth for both entry-level and experienced positions. Reviewing state regulations regarding licensure will help to clarify what level of educational background and field experience is required to obtain employment as a dental assistant.
