Alexander's successors divide his new empire between them and established several kingdoms including in Egypt and Syria-Mesopotamia and other lesser ones in Asia Minor, Afghanistan. These we call today the Hellenistic Kingdoms - not Hellenic (Greek) but trying to be Greek.

They tried to carry on Alexander's ambition to turn western Asia and North Africa to Greek culture as a civilising influence. The result was only superficial amongst the upper classes, but it introduced Greek architecture, learning and culture in some areas. This carried on for nearly a millennium until it was overwhelmed by Arabic culture and Islam.
