What are the advantages and disadvantages of using electric energy?

Renewable, or green, energy has several advantages including but not limited to the fact that it is renewable as well as the lack of harmful emissions. However, renewable energy require expensive facilities and the energy they produce is rather inconsistent. Some renewable energy types also need to be built on specific areas.

One advantage of alternative energy is that once the equipment is set up, it keeps producing energy for a long time with very little additional extra expense. It has several disadvantages. Solar energy is only available during the day and can not be stored. It could be used to heat a lot more hot water than now and pay for itself in about a year. Using solar to produce electricity on house roofs is not really economically feasible at the moment. Wind is economical in certain locations. This country does not have the high voltage lines to ship the electricity from the northern high plains states. It is politically impossible to put large windmills off the coast of Massachusetts otherwise wind energy would provide a large amount of the electricity needed in the New England States.
