Its purpose is to increase performance at high speed by a 'ram air' effect, delivering high pressure air to the engine. Unfortunately engines draw air in hundreds of cubic feet per minute so scoops are not practical to raise intake pressures significantly. Other benefits of a shaker hood include, elevation to prevent water from being drawn on flooded terrain, a cooler source of air, and a more direct path to the engines throttle plate. Because of the high volume of air that engines draw, rain, even a downpour, cannot cause significant damage/wear to the engine.

I am assuming you mean an Olds 350. Yes...for a direct fit with no modifications you will have to use the stock intake manifold, Q-jet carb, air cleaner base and shaker scoop from a T/A that was originally equipped with the Olds 403. After my shaker scoop was stolen, I discovered the hard and expensive way that their are at least 3 different shaker/air cleaner combos to achieve the correct height for the different engines available in these cars.
