This calls for an opinion, but one of my favorite smaller towns is Brattleboro, Vermont. Great scenery, nice people, and well worth a visit. Burlington, Vermont is a bit larger, but it too is a beautiful city. In Maine, Orono, home of the University of Maine, is worth seeing. In Massachusetts, places like Grafton, Sturbridge, and Lee are nice to visit. (Concord, Lexington and Quincy are bigger, but very historical.) If you are in New Hampshire, Laconia has beautiful scenery, especially the lakes.
They prefered small towns.

"praying towns"
I believe is both the New England Colonies & the Middle Colonies
It was different because the towns were really small and barely fit houses. They mostly had hogans, slaves and more!
