Insufficient protein in the diet is the cause of protein malnutrition. Scientific term for protein malnutrition is Kwashiorkor.
It depends on a lot of factors. If you by malnutrition mean no feeding at all then yes! But if you mean decreased nutrition of any of the macromolecules (am. ac., carboh., lipids etc.) there's a golden rule. Example: If the enzymes that are used to break down carbohydrates are no longer needed because a person no longer eats carbohydrates they will be downregulated. This is due to hormonal factors (in this case decreased insulin release from beta-cells in the Langerhans Islands of the endocrine pancreas). There's a different story for fats, but same principle.
