The conflict in Kashmir started over the partition of India. In 1947, Lord Mountbatten divided British India into two countries, India and Pakistan, largely on religious grounds. India comprised mostly of Hindus, while Pakistan comprised mostly of Muslims. About 580 states had to decide which country they wanted to belong to, which was usually determined religiously. Kashmir had Sikh rulers and Muslim civilians, so there was no obvious country it should belong to. The rulers decided to join India, while most of the population would have chosen Pakistan. Pakistan and India both claimed Kashmir and have been fighting ever since. As many as 60,000 people have been killed over this conflict.
