Well, your knowledge is incorrect. The majority of the citizens of Mauritius are Hindu (50.4%). Muslims in Mauritius are only 16.6% or roughly one-sixth of the population. As to whether that population is Sunni or Shiite, most of the Muslims on Mauritius are Sunni (around 95% of all Muslims in the country). When the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died, Abu Bakr (ra) his best friend was appointed kalipha. Shia's believe that he wasn't the right kalipha and Ali (ra) his son in law should have been kalipha. And from then on other differences have formed. But the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told Muslims not to create splits in religion. That's why some Muslims like to not have the label of sunni or shia and rather just be called a Muslim.
shiah as minority and sunni as majority are two main sects of islam.
Most of us are Sunni, of course. Then there are Syrian Christians and Jews, as well. Not as many as Muslims, of course. The sect called the "Alawi" are a minority in Syria - but the president of Syria comes from that group. They are actually not Muslims by the clear definition of what Islam is. But then, I do not consider many of the Shiah to be really Muslims either. At least, not those who pray to other than the One God.
Sunni-Shia division primarily stems from a disagreement over the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad. Sunnis believe leadership should follow the Prophet's companions, while Shias believe only descendants of the Prophet through his cousin and son-in-law Ali are legitimate leaders. This difference in belief has led to theological, jurisprudential, and political distinctions between the two groups.
they are two main great sects if Islam religion. Sunni as majority and Shiah as minority comprise two great sects in Islam religion.
Sunni Islam does not credit any individual with founding specifically Sunni Islam (as opposed to Shiite Islam or Ibadi Islam, etc.). It is the Sunni contention that their faith is the "original and proper faith" as Mohammed revealed it. Therefore, Mohammed would be the Earthly founder of Sunni Islam in their eyes. The first person who practiced Sunni Islam as "opposed to" Shiite Islam would probably be Abu Bakr considering that he was the first Caliph, but again, he would not have founded the faith. Additionally, most Sunni Muslims make the contention that Islam is a Divinely-Created Religion and therefore God himself is the proper founder of Sunni Islam.
