Regular lights (assuming you are referring to automotive applications here) are "incandescent" bulbs which have the following features...

Create light by "trying" to burn out the filament (no oxygen inside the bulb prevents the burnout from happening).

Get very hot (see burnout above).

Use lots of electricity for the amount of light produced.

are fragile (weakened by physical shock and vibration).

Inexpensive to replace.

Burn out (always).

LED (stands for Light Emitting Diode) lights have the following features... Low power consumption (consumes milli-amps instead of amps) for the amount of light produced. Runs cool to the touch, even if on for a very long time. Virtually impervious to physical shock and vibration (is a solid-state device) Much, much more expensive than regular bulbs and usually require replacement of entire lamp assembly if they fail.

Generally last much much longer than regular bulbs, they get dimmer with age instead of outright burning out. Will not tolerate a voltage spike (such as can come from jump starting vehicle or failure of a voltage regulator while lights on or even from arc welding directly on the vehicle) and can fail outright if exposed to one.

Hope this helps.
