The five fitness levels are:

  1. Atrophy- wasting away of essential functions due to complete inactivity
  2. Sedentary- gradual wasting away of essential functions
  3. Improving- person is working toward a more beneficial fitness level (at this level, it is good to set goals)
  4. Maintaining- person maintains a level of fitness that produces positive essential functions (goal level)
  5. Competitive- person is striving for an upper level of improved fitness, and skills.
