Although king John got a lot of undeserved bad press because of the tale of Robin Hood, he was in actual fact an able administrator, a good regent in king Richard's continuous absence and later a good king. The Robin Hood stories of him being out to rob the poor are not based on any historical fact.

Richard the Lionhearted on the contrary is pictured in Robin Hood as the 'good' king, while in reality he hated staying in England (he hardly spent any time there during his reign, preferring to remain on his estates in the south of France) and he saw England only as a source of revenue. Basically, HE should have been the bad guy in the story.
