Clay and other materials.
There should be an ingredients list on the bag of litter as not all litter is the same. It depends on the type of litter (clay or wood pellets) and also the brand.

The cheapest and most common type of kitty litter is Clay. However, there are a variety of other absorbents that have been used including recycled newspapers, popcorn, and silica Gel.

Depends on the litter. Most "clumping" clay cat litters contain mostly bentonite clay with some fragrances, dyes or additives. Most "non clumping" cat litter is made from different types of clay such as zeolite, diatomite and sepiolite.

There are also natural litters on the market made from corn, wheat, walnut pine or even recycled newspaper pellets. These litters don't always clump as well as bentonite litter, but are good for those who are concerned with the mining practices needed to produce the bentonite litter.

A third type of kitty litter is the "crystal" cat litter which is made from silica particles (the same stuff you find stuffed in the toe of your new shoes in a little envelope labelled "dessicant-- do not eat".) This type of kitty litter works by dehydrating the waste thus making it not smell.

How do you train your cat to stop using the litter tray?

How odd. Most people want to train their cats to use the litter tray, not to train them to stop using it. If you don't want your cat to use the litter tray, that's easy; remove the tray. If the tray is not there, the cat cannot use it. Move the litter tray outdoors to get your cat used to going outside and then, eventually, remove the litter tray completely.
