Australia is a long way from Europe. The continents of Asia, Africa and (if you come the other way Americas, are between us an Europe. To give you an idea of say London to Melbourne. You travel across France, Germany, Italy and Greece, through the Middle East, India and the Sub Continent, Asia, Indonesia, Papua/New Guinea and then you fly across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, then into Melbourne. Or, you can fly out of London, over France, down over Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the rest of the African continent, over Madigascar, across the Indian ocean, across more than 2,000 miles of Australia and into Melbourne. From London to Melbourne is about 20 hours flying time, the different airline routes means a trip of 22 to 26 hours depending on the number and length of stops. From Melbourne to Los Angeles is around 17 hours flight time (2011) at a top speed of 1050 k.p.h. (across the Pacific). I left Melbourne at 11.00 a.m. Australian Eastern Time on Friday and landed in Los Angeles at 9.00 a.m. on the same day. There is about a 17 hour time difference (Australia seeing sunrise before U.S).
