Mark's Gospel has been described as a story of the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, with a long introduction. In other words, much of this gospel tells of the crucifixion and the events leading up to it. Jesus had a triumphant entry into Jerusalem, ate a Passover meal and went to pray in the Garden of Gethsemene. He was arrested, tried and crucified. On the morning of the third day, the women visited his tomb and found it empty. The Gospel originally ended after the young man told the women that Jesus was risen, and they fled in fear, telling no-one. The "Long Ending" (verses 16:9-25) were added much later to bring this Gospel more or less into line with the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, telling of appearances of the risen Jesus.
Mark's Gospel is divided into two principal sections. The first division begins with the baptism of Jesus and the voice of God from heaven. The second division begins with the Transfiguration of Jesus and the voice of God from heaven. The baptism is universally accepted as an important gospel event, and the Transfiguration was important in Mark because, in its original form, this Gospel had no appearances of the risen Jesus. The Transfiguration was his most important proof of the relationship of Jesus to God. The entire gospel is then based on a parallel structure in which events in the first set of events are compared or contrasted with matching events in the second set:
