The main reason for having just two parties is the way the President is elected. In order to avoid having the House decide the election, one candidate has to get a majority of the electoral votes. With three parties or more parties splitting the votes, it would be really hard for one party to get this majority. So, the opposition tends to try to combine all the opposing views in order to get the majority votes.
