Only the branch of service in question can answer that question. Their standards are "their standards." The Red Chinese Army made one of the longest marches in history, their standards might be, "being able to march a lot." The US Army wants their people to be healthy and morally fit, so their standards might be..."being a clean cut all American person." The French Foreign Legion used be known for it's "silent" and "non-politically correct" fighting men. They were quiet unknowns (MEN WITH SHADY PASTS), that had a reputation for serious fighting and killing. Only French men could become officers in the Legion; the enlisted men and NCOs were often foreigners. Today, no doubt the Legion is not the Legend it once was, and has more than likely lowered it's traditional standards to political correctness in order to exist. Qualifications in the old Legion was most likely: able to march, carry a fighting load, shoot and fight (hand to hand/bayonet and knife, etc); and follow orders. If a man can do that...he's a "fighting man!" A Legionaire.
