George Washington believed that political parties would be the down fall of our country. As he neared his resignation, George Washington wrote a letter to the nation. He warned of the danger of political parties, and how they would turn the government from a group of people interested in their nation's future to a rabbling mob of power hungry professional politicians. In short, he opposed political parties. However, near the beginning of the election of the second president, two parties, the Democrats and the Federalists emerged. They declined in popularity, however, and faded from the political mainstream of the time. When the seventh presidency (don't quote me, it was close to then, I'm pretty sure) began, two new parties gained prominence. The National Republicans, or Whigs, and the Democrats. These two political parties are still the most popular today. This is what we have today politicians that represent the rich and powerful not the majority of Americans, and not national unity. None of the founding fathers wanted political parties because the thought they would cause too much conflict.

There is a little history to this because it's complicated.When the country began, there were no political parties. The Founding Fathers mostly split into two groups, which eventually became political parties- the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. George Washington, as first president, refused to join one of these groups/parties (although he tended to agree with the Federalists). After him, the first several presidents were all Federalists or Anti-Federalists. During this time, the Anti-Federalists were renamed the Democratic-Republicans, and eventually just Democrats- which they still are, to the present day.After the War of 1812, the Federalist party disbanded. The Democratic Party then split into two groups- those who supported President Andrew Jackson, and those who opposed him. The opposition broke away and started a new party, the Whig Party, named after an old British political party. There were four Whig presidents (Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, and Fillmore- although Tyler was banished from the party shortly after becoming president). Really tough question considering Washington would not know what to do with technology in its present form and cultural/racial issues. It's almost an impossible question. However if he had enough time to educate himself about the world today, I think Washington's main goal would be to eliminate political parties that exist today. He was a strong proponent that political powers would tear the country apart. Ironically, this was somewhat the case when republicans under the guidance of Abe Lincoln freed the slaves in the southern states that was largely controlled by the democrats. It's even more ironic today how the parties have changed their ideas today given that democrats are normally more supportive of African Americans' rights than republicans. None the less, republicans could have more foresight and be more liberal in a historical sense than democrats. Getting back on topic, Washington would see our party structure today and try to eliminate it.

He learned that the "party" he supported was starting to call themselves "federalists" who believed in strong central government. His opponents called themselves Republicans because they believed in the liberties of the American people. He believed in both and loudly proclaimed so, that parties would tear this country apart. In today's time Republicans are what would have been Democrats and the "Federalists" of his time would now be Republicans.
