Dallas-Fort Worth is considered one metropolitan area. Their downtowns are about 30 miles apart.
The largest city in Texas (in area) is the same as the largest in population: Houston. The reason Houston has continued to grow its population is that it has continued to expand its area. By contrast, Dallas is almost entirely surrounded by incorporated suburbs, and therefore has difficulty annexing new areas to develop; because of this, Dallas's population growth has slowed considerably over the last 20 years. While they are comparable in prestige and metropolitan size, Houston proper is now almost twice as large as Dallas.
While the Dallas/Ft area is known for being situated on mostly flat prairie land, there are indeed some hilly areas. Just West of downtown along I-30, parts of Oak Cliff have some very hilly areas. More prominant hills can be found in the Southwestern Portion of Dallas, Duncanville and into Cedar Hill. This area is actually quite hilly. The highest point in Dallas County is in Cedar Hill and this is where most of the TV transmitter towers are located there. Some have even compared this area to the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
