The most popular flower in Malta is L-ingliza. Reffered mainly to English is cape sorrel or African oxalis.

it was not known locally before the 19th century. in the middle of the 18th century it was grown in Europe in botanic gardens such as Kew in England and at Palermo in Sicily. It is often known as Qares or Qrsu as well as ingliza in Malta. actually its native country is the cape of good hope in south Africa.

Each leaf is ade up of three leaflets which are often spotted with brown spots on the upper surface. This plant did not exist in its wild state in Malta before the coming of the English to Malta and sice its appearance and the arrival of many English imports happened at more of less the same time, the plant was first known as haxixa ta l-inglizi which means the English's plant.

Since its flower stalks taste sour it was known as qares or warsu which both mean Sour Taste. it has a lovely yellow flower which blooms from November to may. this plant is often used as food for many other animals. But slowly it is taking over as it is growing rapidly and most flowers are dying because the African oxalis is taking its place.
