Theravada is called the Teachings of the Elders and is predominant in South East Asia (Burma, Thailand, etc). It is somewhat closer to basics of what the Buddha taught and is more concerned with personnel liberation.
Mahayana is predominate in China, Tibet, Japan. In its teachings it includes discourses and analysis from later Buddhists. It too is primarily concerned with personnel liberation but also includes the importance of helping other sentient beings to reach liberation.

∙ 11y agoThe two main sects of Buddhism are Theravada and Mahayana. The differences between the two are slight but important. Theravada is called the Teaching of the Elders and most closely follows the original teachings of the Buddha and is somewhat conservative to change. It is located in Southeast Asia, China and Japan, and has made a foothold in Europe and the Americas. Mahayana encorporates all the teaching of Thereveda and also includes teachings of later Buddhas and sages. They also introduced a type of person called a Bodhisattva, which is a person dedicated to saving all the people in the world before they become a Buddha.
