In humans the two systems are related like so. After the food goes through the stomach which chemically digests the foods with enzymes, the food passes to the small intestine which finishes the digestion process. The food then makes it'a way to the big intestin. in the big intestine veins absorb the nutriments from what is now feces. These nutriments travel through the blood stream and feeds the cells (supplies them with energy) kinda like the O2 does.
