only automatic transmissions, manuals have their forward and reverse gear selections
It is not possible unless you are driving a very very old car. The reverse gear is mechanically blocked by a synchronizer to prevent exactly this kind of thing.
Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch is out of alignment? Thinks Reverse is Neutral? I don't know Rovers, but there is a safety switch in vehicles with Automatic Transmissions, that prohibit the vehicle from being started in a Driver or Reverse gear.
Yes, nascar race cars have a reverse. They are standard 4-speed Manual transmissions, in a not-so-standard car. They are anything but standard four-speeds. Everyone uses Jerico transmissions, which are made for ease of changing the gear cluster. If you want a different gear ratio in the car, you open the little door in the floorplan, open the top of the transmission, and do your work. Very simple and direct. They also definitely have reverse.
It is a safety system to prevent vehicles with automatic transmissions from being put into gear with out first depressing the break peddle. It prevent the vehicle from lurching forward or reverse when placing the vehicle into gear.
Your gear linkage is offset!! Or you are on a steep down hill
Not sure what you are referring to. On some transmissions it is the highest gear on others (8 and 9 speeds) it is a low gear. Not sure what you are referring to. On some transmissions it is the highest gear on others (8 and 9 speeds) it is a low gear.
Well, first, you didn't specify the vehicle. Secondly, I don't think you quite grasp how transmissions work. The shift cable would be what makes a transmission go into reverse, and that'll be operated either by a manual lever (the shift column) or by an electric solenoid (in push-button transmissions).
No, just automatic transmissions. Manual transmissions do not need to be cooled as they are just a gear box with heavy gear oil in them.
You need to lift the collar on the gear stick to engage reverse gear
check your cross member on the gear selector it sometimes pops off
Reverse gear
