The protests were planned about 40 years ago, well that's what many say in Libya. The main reason for this outbreak is the call for democracy that the western world has. Libya isn't the only country who wanted this anyhow. Algeria, Yemen, Jordan, Bahrain, and many other countries started this protest along with Libya. The cause of this outbreak was from February's events. In that month, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was toppled by Egyptian protesters, who wanted democracy as well when they saw a man, putting himself in fire, and then dying shortly, Egyptians then headed to the streets. The result was great, Egypt currently is making a democratic government similar to the western world's. But there is a catch, making/keeping a democratic government is easier said then done. For example, Canada took 140 years to get democracy circulating through out itself. Hope this helped :)
That's all I can say ;)
