As of 5/10, assuming basic consumer applications, desktop (laptops are a different story):

- Fast memory, 2 GB +

- Good graphics (not integrated with motherboard, PCIE 2.0 interface, 512 MB RAM+)

- Large Hard Drive (2 TB +), optionally enhanced with a smaller SSD drive (very expensive though)

- DVD writer is always nice

- Intel Core 2 Quad/Intel I5/I7 series processor OR AMD Phenom II X4 (X3 high end are ok too)

- Good balance between components. This basically means no component (Memory, hard drive, motherboard, CPU, etc) is significantly faster or slower than the rest. If one component is much faster than the rest, it won't be able to perform up to its full potential and you could get a cheaper one without losing performance; a slower component will slow the rest of the components down and act as a bottleneck. Evaluating how well a computer is balanced requires some technical knowledge and research regarding the performance of its components; however, some websites such as Tom's Hardware Guide will hold competitions to see who can build the fastest computer at a specific price point. These tend to be very well balanced, and looking at one can give you an idea of how components should fit together. Also, anything made by Dell that isn't at the very high or low end is almost universally poorly balanced (I don't know why this is so, but they do it quite consistently)

Qualities or System Resources

Processor - This 'does' what you tell the PC to.

RAM/Memory - This 'remembers' all the things you told the PC to (to get to that particular point). Example you open a web browser, type in the URL to a search engine. RAM 'remembers' that the browser is open.

Hard Drive - Space for saving persistent files (files you want to keep).

Cooling System - Overheating risks are greatest on the processor and hard drive.

Motherboard - This circuit board is the 'central station' of all the resources.

Components

These are often included in a computer, but are not 'essential' to having a PC.

Video Card - hard to imagine a computer with no video/screen to show but it's out there (often as a 'server').

Sound card - can you hear me now?

Input/Output Ports - HDMI? VGA? Serial? Firewire? and the big one... USB?

Network - cat5 network in? phone in? wireless network adapter/receiver?

Disk Drives - Blu-Ray, CD, DVD... read or read and write, lightscribe/laser cover art printing options.

Blue-Tooth - why not? RCA/Components? be nice... finger print scanner for security/access... now you are a geek too.

A good computer should meet the needs of its primary user. Balance cost against what you intend to use the computer for (games, database, server, etc) . For example, there is no point in buying a super-fabulous sound system if you don't intend to make use of it in gaming, watching movies, or playing music.

Note the requirements of various programs you intend to run. Depending on what your requirements are, you will want to check:

* Operating system (Mac vs PC, XP vs Vista, even Linux)

* Memory(RAM) * Speed (processor) * sound card * video card * monitor- size, resolution, flat-screen * wireless access (card, router) * mouse, keyboard * microphone, headset * speakers (internal vs external) * warranty period (and process for for making use of it-- can you take computer back to place of purchase, vs mail it to the manufacturer.)

One thing to be remembered always.

Never think that you are complete or professional.

If you want to the best in any field of life always remain the student. Teach yourself , Never say to all that what you are even you are the best.

Computer is the most complex invention in the world and the most simplest thing to teach.

It has a lot of sub fields in it . you can not learn or teach all the fields of computer.

But the most recent knowledge is necessory for you to be update. but you should teach all those things on computer which are usefull to you and your environment.

Say as i am a programmer and i spend my lot off time in web designing then it will not be usefull to me. if i learn and study all the programming languages which are latest then it will be much more usefull for me.

First identify yourself in one field then start doing sleepless effort to accomplish the task.

Today with the help of internet nothing is difficult to learn. Every thing has become a piece of cake for us. wheather assignments, lectures, projects or any thing.

But a true professional is one who help himself to teach and also help others to teach.

Your practice and try is necessory for your good aim to be a professional.

Lot of fields in computer.

Programming.

Networking.

Artificial Intelligence.

System Analysit.

Hardware Interfacing.

Robotics.

Mechatronics.

Graphics.

Web designing.

and many more.......

But you have to choose one for you future according to your needs and the requirements of you area or environment.

But i guess the best field in all is Programming . Because it is the base of the computer.

By knowing it you may become the best professional in all.

In addition to basic qualities required for most areas of work, software professionals should keep up-to-date with new and emerging technologies, be able to complete required tasks on tight deadlines and with maximum accuracy and also be able to write detailed reports - after all, how do you communicate your progress with a non-technological person? eg. your boss.
